Cultivating Gratitude

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” - Robert Brault

Cultivating a practice of gratitude is a simple, yet powerful way that can completely transform our perspective of life. It’s the mental reset button we need in times of uneasiness and chaos. Reflecting on things that we can be grateful for is the perfect way to transmute disharmonious feelings into harmonious ones.

There are many ways to dive deeper into gratitude.

  • First, notice your breath. If you’re breathing it means you’re alive. That’s the first thing to be grateful for. Take a moment to be a witness to the miracle of your own existence. So many others have not made it this far so the fact that you are here in this very instant is already a huge accomplishment.

  • Now, Take a few deep breaths and shift your attention to your body. How are you feeling? Relax your jaw and your shoulders. Maybe straighten your posture if you notice yourself hunched over. This body of yours is not just any body. It’s your first home, a sacred place, your temple. And like all temples, it should be looked after with much care and intention.

  • Now look around you, what do you see? Is it a home, where you can unwind after a long day? Is it a workplace, where you are able to make financial earnings? Notice the things, people, or pets that are around you. Do they bring you convenience, comfort, joy, reassurance that you’re not alone?

These seemingly meaningless and mundane parts of life are what we can learn the most from. They are the small and sweet things that have the greatest impact on our lives.

When you really think about it, that’s what gratitude is, the noticing of the sweet parts of life, no matter how small they are. And the more you notice it, the sweeter it becomes.

“The more grateful I am, the more beauty I see” - Mary Davis
